Alaska Airlines will launch daily service between San Jose, Calif., and Austin, Texas, on Sept. 2.
Alaska's announcement comes on the heels of news that American will cease its San Jose-Austin service on Aug. 25. The flight is known as the “Nerd Bird” because of its popularity with business travelers who work at technology companies.
"The San Jose-Austin route is a natural extension of our network, providing a vital link between two high-tech hubs," said Andrew Harrison, Alaska Airlines' vice president of planning and revenue management.
Alaska's "Nerd Bird" service will be available for purchase starting June 25. The airline will operate the flights with Boeing 737-800s, accommodating 16 passengers in first class and 141 in the main cabin.
