American Airlines has loosened its rules for customers to carry on a pet.

The new policy, which took effect March 28, allows such flyers to stow a carry-on bag in an overhead bin. Previously, American customers who carried on a pet could only bring a personal item, such as a purse or backpack, which could fit under the seat.

Under the new rules, these flyers are still restricted to either a personal item or a carry-on. They aren't allowed both.

American increased its fee for in-cabin pets from $125 to the $150 in February.
