BA's parent must surrender Heathrow slots to acquire BMI

The European Commission on Friday cleared British Airways parent International Airlines Group to acquire British Midland (BMI) on the condition that it relinquish 14 daily London Heathrow slot pairs "in order to facilitate new entry."

International Airlines Group also must make good on a "commitment to carry connecting passengers to feed the long-haul flights of competing airlines out of London Heathrow," according to the European Commission decision.

International Airlines Group in November announced an agreement to acquire BMI from Lufthansa.
