IndiGo, the low-cost carrier that dominates the domestic Indian market, has ordered its first widebody jets, setting the stage for a move into long-haul flying.
The carrier expects to receive the first of 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft in 2027.
IndiGo has also lined up purchase rights for an additional 70 A350s.
The company didn't single-out potential long-haul destinations in its Thursday announcement, but said the planes would enable it to "spread its wings and further expand its network."
"From the various Indian metros, IndiGo will be able to connect to the world," the airline said.
IndiGo's narrowbody orderbook
IndiGo has a current fleet of 350 planes, but it made headlines last year when it ordered 500 Airbus narrowbodies, which the plane maker said was the largest order in the history of commercial aviation.
IndiGo's total narrowbody orderbook over the next decade is nearly 1,000 planes, augmented now by this long-haul order.
