The transpacific joint venture between American Airlines and Japan Airlines has produced its first new route, a JAL-operated nonstop between Boston and Tokyo Narita.
JAL said Boston will be the airline's first new North American gateway in 13 years. JAL will launch the service on April 22, 2012, flying the route four times per week. It plans to increase to daily service on June 1.
JAL intends to use the Boeing 787 Dreamliner on the route, making Boston the first destination named by JAL to use the new plane.
American’s code will be on the Boston-Tokyo flight, enabling American to sell it.
In April, JAL and American launched their immunized joint venture, which allows the partners to coordinate fares and schedules on flights between Japan and the U.S. The carriers also share revenue and costs on those routes.
JAL said the joint venture "significantly supports the viability of the new Tokyo-Boston route."
Also, JAL said it has begun discussions with JetBlue on a deal that would enable JetBlue customers to seamlessly connect with JAL's service in Boston. JetBlue has a similar deal in place with American at New York's Kennedy Airport.
