The Department of Transportation has approved start-up Norse Atlantic Airways' application for a foreign air carrier permit, clearing the way for the carrier to begin transatlantic operations.
Norse Atlantic expects to begin flying between Oslo and the U.S. sometime this spring. CEO Bjorn Tore-Larsen said the first U.S. destination will be either Fort Lauderdale; Ontario, Calif.; or Stewart International Airport, which is about 60 miles north of New York City.
Norse Atlantic received its air operator's certificate from the Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority in December.
The carrier ultimately plans to offer discount service between a range of destinations throughout the U.S. and Europe using a fleet of 15 Boeing 787 aircraft.
