The San Francisco Airport Commission has approved a resolution to rename the airport's international terminal for the late Dianne Feinstein, a longtime U.S. senator and former San Francisco mayor. Feinstein died last September.
A nomination was submitted in November 2023 by a committee that includes former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown and retired airport director John Martin.
The nominating committee said that as mayor in 1980 and 1981, Feinstein led the negotiation of a 30-year lease and use agreement with the airlines that "transformed San Francisco Airport's business operation" and provided for the construction of its first international terminal, which opened in 1983.
The committee also called Feinstein "a tireless advocate for SFO behind the scenes, including supporting SFO's first in-line baggage screening system following 9/11 and helping SFO access new FAA technology to improve safety and reduce delays."
With the adoption of a resolution to rename the international terminal for Feinstein, the airport will collaborate with the nominating committee on implementation. There is no timeline for completion.
