Southwest Airlines in March will open a crew base for pilots and flight attendants at Austin-Bergstrom Airport.

The Texas city is paying Southwest $5.5 million in incentives to open the base and create 2,000 jobs by mid-2027.

Southwest is Austin's largest airline with some 130 peak-day departures. In March, new service begins to Fort Myers, Fla.; Palm Springs, Calif.; and Steamboat Springs (Hayden), Colo., bringing Southwest's total of nonstop destinations from Austin to 53.

Southwest also will begin daily service between Austin and Cincinnati next June and has increased seasonal service in Pensacola, Fla.
