CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- US Airways said it
will discontinue service on at least 20 nonstop routes from
Pittsburgh (see list at right) in November as part of its
continuing transformation plan, which includes downsizing
Pittsburgh from a hub to a focus city. The airline emphasized the
reductions still will leave it with service to more than 50
markets, including 28 of the top 30, and that it will remain the
airports largest carrier.
The routes to be
discontinued Nov. 7 include Frankfurt, Germany, and London
(Gatwick), the latter a seasonal service that would have
temporarily ceased in November anyway. All of the others are US
Airways Express carrier service to small or mid-sized U.S.
communities, such as Akron and Canton, Ohio; Columbia, S.C.; Grand
Rapids, Mich.; and Lexington, Ky. Nonstop service also is ending to
Montreal and Ottawa in Canada.
Except for
Akron/Canton and Grand Rapids, all of the cities still will be
reachable on US Airways from Pittsburgh by using connecting
flights. US Airways said the full details of the fall schedule will
be available in early September, and it noted additional cuts on
the US Airways Express network remain possible because the
independently owned affiliate carriers still are finalizing their
schedules.
The new reductions
come on top of previous cuts between July and October that included
the discontinuation of nonstop service to Cleveland; Houston;
Kansas City, Mo.; Memphis; Milwaukee; and Minneapolis.
