United Airlines has postponed the launch of two international routes due to increased safety oversight by the FAA.
The carrier had been scheduled to launch service between Newark and Faro, Portugal, on May 24 and between Tokyo Narita and the Philippines beach destination of Cebu on July 31.
The route to Faro, located in the southern Portuguese province of Algarve, will now be on hold until the summer 2025, while the Cebu launch has been rescheduled for Oct. 25.
United was to be only airline flying between the U.S. and Faro this summer, and it was slated to be lone U.S. airline serving Cebu.
Impacted travelers can receive a refund or be rebooked for free on a United partner.
The FAA announced on March 22 that it would increase oversight of United after a string of safety-related incidents last month. The agency said it would dispatch more officials to review United's work processes and manuals and to examine the carrier's facilities.
As part of that effort, the FAA planned to also pause some certification processes related to United.
In a Tuesday email, United confirmed that the Faro and Cebu schedule changes are a consequence of that pause.
