Houston and Anaheim, Calif., have the highest lodging tax rates of the largest 25 U.S. cities, according to hospitality consulting firm HVS .
Visitors to Anaheim and Houston pay 17% lodging taxes on average. Chicago, Atlanta and Seattle all tax overnight visitors at about a 16% rate, according to HVS.
On the low end of the top 25 U.S. cities, Tampa visitors pay about a 12% lodging tax, while a 12.5% tax applies to visitors to Orlando and San Diego.
Hotels in Dallas, Las Vegas, Miami and New Orleans all charge a 13% occupancy tax.
Among the largest 150 U.S. cities, St. Louis charges the highest lodging tax rate at 18%, while Lancaster, Calif., has the lowest at 7%.
