The Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, one of three hotels damaged in the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, has reopened its historic Palace Wing.

Although the hotel’s Tower Wing reopened shortly after the siege, the original Palace Wing, home to the hotel's grand ballroom and 297 guest rooms, has undergone extensive restoration.

The wing had been set to reopen in May, but the date was pushed back. During a press conference Thursday, hotel executives said the hotel would fully reopen Aug. 15, India's Independence Day.

The Palace Wing was heavily damaged by gunfire, grenades and fire in the terrorist attacks that killed more than than 160 people, including 12 Taj hotel employees.
