The W Amsterdam, which opened with 172 guestrooms last
October in what was previously the city’s Telephone Exchange Building, has opened
a 66-room expansion in the former KAS Bank building across the street.
The building, which was constructed in 1908, houses an
Away-branded spa in the old bank vaults and The Butcher, a hamburger restaurant.
Positioned as a more low-key counterpart to the hotel’s
Exchange building, the Bank building also includes an “incubator space” for
young artists and designers called X Bank.
Design references to the building’s historic function
include black-and-gold bedspreads inspired by bank vaults and minibars shaped
like bank vaults.
