San Francisco’s first Waldorf Astoria hotel will be built
near the Transbay Transit Center, in the city’s South of Market district.
The hotel, to be operated by Waldorf Astoria parent Hilton
Worldwide, will occupy the first 21 stories of a new tower on Mission Street,
about six blocks southwest of the Ferry Building.
The 171-room hotel is slated to open in 2021. The
property will feature a spa, personal concierges and a Peacock
Alley restaurant.
The Transbay Transit Center project will also include a
205-room Langham Place hotel that will be designed by Italian architect Renzo
Piano and is slated for completion in 2019.
Billed as the “Grand Central Station of the West,” the $4.5
billion Transbay Transit Center will serve more than 100,000 passengers a day
and 11 transit systems, including local bus and light-rail lines as well as
Caltrain, Amtrak and, ultimately, California’s high-speed rail service. The
project is receiving local, state and federal funding.
The Transbay project will also have a 5.4-acre park above
the facility. Plus, 4,500 condominiums and apartments are planned for the
immediate area.
The Transbay Transit Center’s first phase is scheduled to
open next year.
