The adventure travel market has moved from niche to mainstream. That's according to new research from the Adventure Travel Trade Association, which found that the majority of travelers are open to adventure.
The industry is valued at approximately $185 billion alone in North America and $1 trillion worldwide, representing a huge opportunity for tour operators and travel advisors to serve the adventurous traveler.
In its new report, "Adventure Travel Market Sizing: North America 2026," ATTA found that the U.S. and Canada is the most lucrative source market. Travelers seek experiential travel and aim to blend activity, culture and personal enrichment on their journeys.
"Hiking, wildlife, and outdoor activity remain important, but they are rarely standalone drivers. North American travelers increasingly expect layered experiences: a scenic trek paired with local storytelling, a wildlife encounter complemented by community interaction or a culinary experience embedded in heritage," ATTA said.
So who are these travelers? The majority are ages 26 to 45, traveling as a couple or family, and have a middle to upper-middle household income.
Only 14% of the entire North America source market is made up of guests seeking physical activity, while 24% are cultural explorers, 12% are nature enthusiasts and 14% want a variety of adventure experiences. The remainder, 36%, do not consider themselves adventurers.
ATTA said the most competitive products "will not be defined solely by activity level, but by how thoughtfully tour operators integrate multiple dimensions of experience."
