Several tourism associations in the U.S. and Canada have created a coalition to voice their concerns about President Trump's policies "creating an environment of instability" and negatively impacting travel between the neighboring countries.

The coalition includes the U.S. Tour Operators Association, Adventure Travel Trade Association, American Bus Association, Canadian Association of Tour Operators, Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada, International Inbound Travel Association, National Tour Association and Student & Youth Travel Association.

The coalition paints a grim picture for the days ahead for U.S.-Canada tourism. The tariffs that the president intends to enforce, paired with Trump-induced global tensions, poses risks to the "financial health of countless businesses but also the livelihoods of millions of workers who rely on a thriving tourism industry," the coalition said.

Trump has repeatedly made comments about wanting to make Canada the 51st American state, angering Canadians and contributing to a drop in Canada-U.S. air bookings. Trump has also created tensions with the governments of Denmark and Greenland in expressing his intention for the U.S. to acquire the territory.

Stricter U.S. border patrol, which has led to incidents of international visitors being detained, has spurred Ireland, Germany, the U.K. and Canada to update their travel guidance for citizens, advising them of stricter scrutiny when entering the U.S.

The coalition said that it was "critical" to relax the U.S. border and eliminate barriers for travelers.

"Policies that simplify visa processes and enhance cross-border collaboration can foster economic growth while encouraging cultural exchange and understanding, helping dispel damaging stereotypes," the coalition said.

Foreign tourist spending in the U.S. is expected to drop by 11%, resulting in an $18 billion revenue loss this year, the coalition says.

Canada is also facing declines in U.S. travelers this year. U.S. visitors spend an estimated $13 billion in Canada each year.

"Despite these U.S. and Canadian tourism industry challenges, we have formed a coalition committed to working together as an industry to ensure we support tourism opportunities between our great countries," the group said. "We know that by committing to work together we bring our countries closer together."
