The latest consumer tracking data from Deloitte indicate summer travel plans are growing and travel search and spending are on the rise.

Mid-May findings from Deloitte's biweekly Global State of the Consumer Tracker show nearly one-third, or 31%, of consumers said they were planning to stay in a hotel for leisure in the summer months, up from 24% in mid-April.

The number of respondents who said they would feel safe staying in a hotel also rose, from roughly one in five in April to nearly a third, 30%.

The survey also showed that consumers are visiting travel websites again, and travel spending has seen four weeks of year-over-year growth, Deloitte said.

Deloitte analysts, however, caution that the outlook for leisure travel's recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic remains murky.

While consumer fears about health are decreasing, the survey shows that the percentage of U.S. consumers concerned about making upcoming payments (27%) and delaying large purchases (43%) aren't easing. And Americans are quick to cut vacations from their budgets when times get tough, Deloitte said.
