A two-week curfew took effect Sept. 2 in the British Virgin Islands due to a recent spike in Covid-19 cases there.

The lockdown will be in place through Sept. 16 and runs from 1 p.m. each day to 5 a.m. the following morning, according to Andrew Fahie, premier and minister of finance.

Only essential business will be allowed to operate, beaches will close at noon and fines will be issued for breaking curfew or for failing to wear a face mask and maintain social distancing.

"We find ourselves at the crossroads where we have had to readjust our existing plan and adjust our course once again," Fahie said.

He warned that failure to adhere to the measures in place would force government "to implement a 24-hour, 14-day lockdown. Let's not blow this, but rather get it right."

The destination has not yet reopened its borders to international travelers.
