Carnival Corp. has installed a solar park at its Amber Cove Cruise Center in the Dominican Republic. Carnival says it will supply 80% of the port's energy.

The solar park is using 1,800-plus solar panels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 1,000 tons per year, according to Carnival Corp.

The project is the first of its size in the Dominican Republic and reduces the port's reliance on fossil fuel-based energy, said Joel Santos, minister of the presidency of the Dominican Republic.

Carnival Corp. has made it a goal to reach a 20% carbon-intensity reduction relative to 2019 levels by 2030 and achieve carbon-neutral ship operations by 2050.

The 25-acre Amber Cove Cruise Center is located on the Dominican Republic's north coast outside of Puerto Plata. Developed in partnership with Grupo Rannik, Amber Cove opened in late 2015 and is one of eight port destinations or private islands owned by Carnival Corp.

Carnival Cruise Line, Costa Cruises, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises visit Amber Cove.
