Oahu 's Ohana Adventure Tours opens with biking, hiking options

HONOLULU -- A biking and hiking tour company called Ohana Adventure Tours Hawaii opened here.

The company is the only tour company to offer guided cycling and mountain biking on Oahu, according to company president John Alford.

A view of Diamond Head, Waikiki and Manoa Valley from a suburban downhill bike ride offered by Ohana Adventure Tours in Hawaii. Alford, who is the author of two guidebooks about mountain biking in Hawaii, offers two trips: the Oahu Bike & Hike for $65 and the Mountain Biking Ka'a'awa Valley at Kualoa for $85. Both are on Oahu.

The Oahu Bike & Hike is a leisurely downhill bicycle ride on a quiet paved road in the hills above Honolulu followed by a two-mile hike to Manoa Falls. The bicycle ride takes place on Roundtop Drive -- probably the most scenic road in Honolulu.

The tour lasts about four hours, and clients are picked up and dropped off at their hotels in Waikiki.

The price includes continental breakfast, bicycles, helmets, snacks and water.

The downhill ride is approximately five miles, and just about anyone who can ride a bike can take part in the tour.

The bike ride is followed by a hike to Manoa Falls in nearby Manoa Valley. The hike is considered easy to moderate, but the trail can be very muddy and slippery at times.

After pickup in Waikiki, Alford gives a narrated tour of Honolulu with a stop at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific inside Punchbowl, a volcanic crater.

The cinder cone volcano also is known as Puowaina, an ancient Hawaiian place of worship where human sacrifices were held.

During the tour, clients also get a lesson in Oahu volcanology with explanations of how the island was formed by two large shield volcanos -- the Waianae and the Koolau -- and a brief history lesson of the Manoa Valley. The Bike & Hike tour is offered Mondays through Fridays.

The Mountain Biking Ka'a'awa Valley at Kualoa offers single-track mountain biking on beginning to advanced trails. This five-hour tour is offered on weekends and includes a lunch.

Clients are picked up and dropped off in Waikiki.
