U.S. national parks in Hawaii are progressing in stages as they reopen from Covid-19 closures.
On June 15, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park increased access to additional park roads, trails and scenic overlooks after partially reopening to the public on May 20. The following areas are now open: Crater Rim Drive to Kilauea Military Camp, and to Devastation Trail parking lot; Kilauea summit area trails, including Byron Ledge Trail, Devastation, and Halemaumau trails; Kilauea Iki Overlook and trail; Chain of Craters Road to the Mauna Ulu parking lot; Puuhuluhulu and trails near Mauna Ulu; Kau Desert and Mauna Iki trails.
Volcano House, Kilauea Military Camp and Volcano Art Center Gallery all reopened June 15, as well. Park officials reminded visitors to practice social distancing, wear a face mask and to stay home if they are ill
"Services are limited, and visitors should bring everything they might need for a safe visit including water, meals and hand sanitizer," Hawaii Volcanoes National Park acting superintendent Rhonda Loh said in a statement. "Above all, visitors should pack their patience, avoid crowds and have alternate destinations planned should parking lots be full."
Additionally, Maui's Haleakala National Park began a phased reopening on June 12.
The areas of the park now open include: the Summit District of Haleakala National Park,from the park entrance to the summit; Hosmer Grove Trail; Supply Trailfrom Hosmer Grove to HalemauuTrail junction; Leleiwi Overlook Trail; Pa Kaoao Trail.
The public restrooms at the Headquarters Visitor Center and the Haleakala Visitor Center are also open, but the centers themselves and all other areas of the park are still closed. The park is not currently accepting reservations for sunrise.
