The eruption of world's largest volcano, Mauna Loa, began on Nov. 27, and after nearly two weeks of spectacular lava fountaining and flows, it came to an end on Dec. 13. Its main flow stopped short of the major highway it was threatening, and the lava supply ceased.

Based on historical data, scientists do not believe that Mauna Loa will restart its eruption. Alert levels have been downgraded.

Interestingly, Kilauea's lava lake ceased during the same month, on Dec. 9, in what the United States Geological Survey is calling a "pause." It's unknown how long this pause will last.
