The Pearl Harbor National Memorial began charging a parking fee of $7 per day on April 15. "Revenue will be used to cover the cost of collections at the park, address the park's deferred maintenance backlog and provide enhanced visitor services," the National Park Service (NPS) stated in a notice.
The parking fee will be charged through an on-site kiosk or through the visitor's mobile device. It applies for all visitors who drive to the site.
"These fees were determined by cost comparison of other sites on Oahu and at other national park sites," the NPS said. "In accordance with NPS public involvement guidelines, the park engaged numerous individuals, organizations and local, state and federal government representatives while planning for the implementation of this fee."
Admission to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and the USS Arizona Memorial and museums is still free.
