Visitors to Nayarit now have a new reason to explore. The village of Mexcaltitan has been designated a Magic Town of Mexico, a designation for historical towns.
Located a short boat ride from Riviera Nayarit, the island village is known as the Venice of Mexico, because the streets become canals during the rainy season.
There are no cars -- instead, locals ride canoes in and around.
Flanking the high sidewalks are brightly colored houses and restaurants serving fresh seafood and ceviche.
Some believe that Mexcaltitan served as the prototype for Tenochtitlan, which was the ancient Aztec capital on which Mexico City sits today.
