The giraffe is in danger of becoming extinct in the wild, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Wilderness Travel is doing its part to help protect the world's tallest land mammal from that unthinkable fate with a new conservation safari in 2017.

The 13-day Giraffe Conservation Safari will take place only once, for only six people. Participants will travel to a remote mobile camp in Namibia to work with field biologists at the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. Led by Julian Fennessy, Africa's pre-eminent authority on giraffe conservation, travelers will help put GPS radio collars on two giraffes after they are tranquilized.

Barbara Banks, director of new trip development and marketing for Wilderness Travel, explained: "Our guests get to see the direct impact of their funds and even get directly involved on the front lines. This is the definition of a meaningful safari."

Participants will learn about efforts to save the giraffe as well as enjoy more traditional safari experiences, including tracking cheetahs on foot and searching for leopards on the great salt pans of Etosha National Park. Safari-goers also get to interact with the seminomadic Himba people as well as track the endangered black rhino and follow the desert-adapted elephant.

Namibia: Giraffe Conservation and Safari departs July 7 and is priced at $6,895 per person, double.
