This winter, two new Alaska Railroad packages are pairing train tickets and accommodations with opportunities to view the northern lights and ride with sled dogs.

Available through March, the eight-night Borealis package starts with a two-night stay at Borealis Basecamp outside of Fairbanks. The property's private domes are equipped with windows that let guests view the aurora borealis without leaving their beds. The Aurora Winter Train then carries passengers to Chena Hot Springs and later to Talkeetna, where participants can take a guided dog-mushing tour or book a flightseeing tour of the Alaska Range. The tour ends with time to experience cultural attractions and recreational activities in Anchorage.

The Alaska Railroad's weeklong Aurora package travels north from Anchorage to Fairbanks and includes many of the same activities as the Borealis package, with overnight stays in Anchorage, Talkeetna and Fairbanks.

Package rates start at $1,459 per person, double occupancy.
