Walt Disney World Resort is preparing to launch MagicBand+, a next-gen version of Disney's MagicBand wearable tech wristband, next year.

Originally rolled out in 2013, MagicBand was created to offer a "more convenient and hands-free" experience, with guests able to enter the parks and their hotel rooms, purchase food and merchandise and more via RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology.

In addition to maintaining existing MagicBand functions, MagicBand+ will feature new interactive elements. For example, guests will be able to use their MagicBand+ wristband to search for virtual bounties throughout Black Spire Outpost at the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge land at Disney's Hollywood Studios, or interact with statues scattered around the Walt Disney World theme parks.

MagicBand+ will also showcase new color-changing light features, with the wristband able to light up in coordination with entertainment and fireworks shows like "Harmonious" at Epcot and "Disney Enchantment" at Magic Kingdom Park.

The MagicBand+ wristbands will be available for purchase, with pricing yet to be announced. The existing MagicBand wristbands, which will continue to be made available, currently have a starting retail price of around $20 each.

Disney Resort hotel guests and new and renewing Walt Disney World Annual Passholders will receive access to discounted, pre-arrival MagicBand+ pricing.

Disney marking its 50th

The MagicBand+ announcement comes as Walt Disney World Resort prepares to mark its 50th anniversary with an 18-month celebration event, set to kick off this Friday, Oct. 1.

Along with MagicBand+, Disney recently detailed plans for the upcoming launch of its Disney Genie digital planning platform as well as its FastPass replacement, Disney Genie+.
