With the Florida Keys closed to tourism, promoters have launched an initiative to help travel advisors and consumers stay engaged with the destination.
The social media-based Safer@Home program encourages Facebook, Instagram and Twitter fans and followers to tune in for live-streamed Keys content while at home.
The initiative will feature social posts showcasing virtual tours of Keys attractions and wildlife facilities; nature scenes and activities; live performances by local musicians; offerings from Keys cultural organizations and museums; how-to recipe videos for favorite island dishes; and local products and treats that can be ordered for delivery.
At the same time, it drives home the message that for the moment the Keys doesn't want tourists and that those who love the area would best serve it by staying home.
A second part of the promotion is the #KeysAtHomeChallenge. As the stay-at-home order continues, the Keys will stage a consumer video challenge on social media. Those entering the challenge are asked to post a video, up to a minute long, re-creating their favorite moments or activities in the Keys and using the hashtag #KeysAtHomeChallenge.
The contest will run for two weeks, and a randomly chosen winner will get a free trip to the Keys after the destination reopens.
