Tourists urged to avoid Napa Valley while fires burn

With a string of devastating wildfires engulfing areas of California's Napa and Sonoma wine regions, tourism marketing organization Visit Napa Valley advised visitors to make alternate travel plans until the fires have been contained.

"Due to road passage difficulty and poor air quality, please consider making alternate travel plans until the fires in Napa Valley have been contained," Visit Napa Valley said in a statement.

Visit Napa Valley has created a web page listing businesses that are open and closed. It noted that updated information on the wildfires can be found on the Napa County Sheriff's Office website.

According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, 17 large wildfires started burning across California on Sunday night and have burned more than 115,000 acres of land. Eleven people have died as a result of the wildfires in Northern California's Sonoma, Mendocino, Napa and Yuba counties, which have already burned an estimated 1,500 homes and commercial structures.

Hilton said that the 250-room Hilton Sonoma Wine Country in Santa Rosa sustained fire damage. Some Marriott International hotels, including the Westin Verasa Napa and Las Alcobas Napa Valley, have temporarily suspended new reservations.
