Instead of the traditional fireworks display, Las Vegas is planning a virtual way to "kiss off 2020" and welcome a hopeful 2021.
Since there is no formal in-person, Strip-wide event, organizers hope this is the next best thing. Those who had hoped to welcome the New Year in uniquely Vegas style can log on to VisitVegas.com, Vegas' Facebook page or its YouTube channel for a live-streamed countdown.
A DJ will perform, and fans can share what they are most looking forward to in 2021 for a chance to win trips to Las Vegas.
At midnight, a 2020 sign will be lit -- and then blown up. An LED-lit 2021 sign will be revealed with confetti, streamers and a 12-15-minute fireworks display.
"We know that celebrating New Year's Eve in Las Vegas is a bucket list item and a long-held tradition," said Steve Hill, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
"Although many visitors from around the country and the world will not be able to join us in person to turn the calendar, this virtual event will allow us to share our enthusiasm and excitement with Vegas fans near and far as we look toward a brighter 2021."
