Frontier Airlines has ordered 91 additional Airbus A321neo planes, a move that CEO Barry Biffle says will enable the discount carrier to triple in size by 2029.

The order augments the Denver-based carrier's existing 143-plane order book of aircraft in the Airbus A320 family. The combined 234 aircraft are slated for delivery between 2022 and 2029. Accounting for retirements, Frontier expects a total fleet of 272 by the end of 2029, up from the 112 it is flying today.

The Frontier order is just a portion of a 255-plane order of narrowbody aircraft announced by Frontier parent Indigo Partners on Sunday at the Dubai Airshow. Hungary's Wizz Air will take 102 planes, Mexico's Volaris will receive 39 aircraft and Chile's JetSmart will get 23 more planes.

All of Indigo's airlines are ultralow-cost carriers. Combined, the Indigo airlines ordered 226 A321neos and 29 of the longer-range A321XLRs.

"This order reaffirms our portfolio of airlines' commitment to consistent growth through the next decade," Indigo managing partner Bill Franke said in a prepared comment.
