Spirit Airlines will charge customers $5 to have their boarding passes printed by an agent at the airport, effective Nov. 1.

The fee is per person and applies to all domestic and international flights booked June 21 and beyond for travel after Nov. 1.

Customers can avoid the $5 fee by checking in online or at a self-service airport kiosk.

However, a $1 fee for the kiosk check-in will kick in on June 26, 2012. At that point, only Spirit's online check-in will continue to be free.

"It's all about customer choice," said Ben Baldanza, president and CEO. "We could charge more and include everything in a high fare, but that presumes that all customers want all options. By charging only those who choose for us to print their boarding pass, we let the customer decide."
