United will pause pilot hiring in May and June due to Boeing aircraft delivery delays.

The airline expects hiring to resume in July, vice president of flight operations Marc Champion wrote in a staff memo.

"As you know, United has hundreds of new planes on order, and while we remain on path to be the fastest-growing airline in the industry, we just won't grow as fast as we thought we would in 2024 due to continued delays at Boeing," Champion wrote. "For example, we had contractual deliveries for 80 Max 10s this year alone, but those aircraft aren't even certified yet, and it's impossible to know when they will arrive."

United also has contracts to receive 34 Max 9 planes and 43 Max 8 planes this year, but now only expects delivery of 19 Max 9s and 37 Max 8s.

In January, with delays mounting, United removed the Max 10 from its internal growth plans. The carrier has a total of 277 Max 10s on order.

Champion said United has thus far hired 450 pilots this year and is on track to have hired 800 by the end of April.
