Apple Leisure Group (ALG) has agreed to acquire a majority
stake in Spanish chain Alua Hotels & Resorts for an undisclosed sum.
Launched in 2015 by a group backed by private equity firm
Alchemy Partners, Alua manages 12 hotels throughout Spain's Balearic and Canary
islands. The brand plays in the midscale sector, operating three-star and
four-star properties under the Alua, AluaSun, AluaSoul and AluaVillage brands.
The Alua business will be integrated into ALG's European
division. Alua Hotels & Resorts CEO Javier Águila will take on the new role
of Apple Leisure Group Europe president. He will also join ALG's executive
committee.
Apple Leisure Group CEO Alex Zozaya called the Alua acquisition
"just the beginning of ALG's European expansion plans."
Earlier this year, ALG said its AMResorts subsidiary would
make its Europe debut via a strategic partnership with Spain's Grupo Inversor
Hesperia.
Under the deal, ALG is handling sales and marketing for four properties in
Spain that will be rebranded as Secrets, Dreams and Amigo resorts.
With the addition of the Alua resorts, ALG will have 16
properties and more than 4,000 guestrooms in Spain.
