The Oct. 1 mass shooting on the Las Vegas Strip affected the city's visitor count for October, which fell 4.2% from a year earlier, to 3.6 million.

Hotel occupancy for the entire city declined 2.7 percentage points to 90%, with occupancy on the Strip falling 2.4 points to 91.3%, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) said Thursday. Room rates were little changed at about $139 a night.

Hotels have stepped up promotions to lure guests. Las Vegas Sands earlier this month started offering discounts as high as 25% on stays through Jan. 14 at the Venetian and Palazzo.

MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment offered big Cyber Monday deals.
