The Yards development in Washington, D.C., will be home to a
Thompson hotel.
The 225-room Thompson D.C. will have views of the Nationals
Park baseball stadium to the west and the Navy Yard neighborhood to the east. Opening
is scheduled for early 2020.
The building's design will take cues from the area's past by
integrating dark brick and patterns from historic naval structures.
The Yards is a 48-acre development along the Anacostia
River, about a mile and a half southeast of the National Mall. The area housed
a wharf, sugar refinery and brewery during the 19th century before becoming
part of Navy Yard. Production of naval ships in the area slowed after World War
II.
The developer, Forest City, gained the rights from the
federal government to redevelop the area in 2004.
In addition to the hotel, the Yards will eventually have
about 3,400 residential units and 400,000 square feet of retail and restaurant
space. The hotel is a block north of Yards Park, which opened on the waterfront
in 2011.
