Cambodia border fighting has hurt Angkor Wat but not Mekong cruising

According to tour and river cruise operators, there's currently a mixed bag of demand for travel to Cambodia, which reported a 17% decline in international visitors last year.

It appears that river cruises are faring better than land tours.

A decades-old border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia reignited last July before a ceasefire was reached. That lasted until December, when fighting resumed. A second ceasefire agreement was announced in late December.

The fighting has resulted in fewer visitors to Angkor Wat, Cambodia's top tourist attraction, right in the middle of the high season. Ticket sales manager Angkor Enterprise reported that there were approximately 93,500 purchases in January, down from 146,150 in January 2025.

G Adventures has seen a drop in bookings to Cambodia, which the tour operator links to the conflict. It is avoiding areas that have been impacted by the fighting.

Because Cambodia's tourism numbers dropped last year, G Adventures had announced that it would move its annual GX Summit from Morocco to Cambodia this September.

"We are hoping that by shining a spotlight on this incredible country, by bringing media, content creators, travelers and industry leaders, we'll help drive tourism and bring economic benefits to those communities that need it most," said Steve Lima, G Adventures' vice president of growth for the U.S. and Latin America.

Though adventure operator Intrepid Travel has not observed a drop in demand or increased Cambodia cancellations, the tour operator has dropped Battambang from itineraries through July. The Thailand-Cambodia conflict has affected Battambang, where people have died or been displaced.

Meanwhile, Mekong river cruises, which primarily visit Cambodia and Vietnam, seem to be doing fine. Avalon Waterways said Mekong sales are up 15% and that cruises through the first quarter of this year are nearly sold out.

Tauck, which offers Cambodia land tours and Mekong river cruises, has seen strong interest in the region, said brand manager Kelly Coughlan.

Scenic Group, parent of the Scenic and Emerald cruise brands, reports a 10% increase in Mekong passengers for 2026.
