LITTLETON, Colo. -- Phillip Gordon took over as president and CEO of Globus & Cosmos following the death of Paolo Mantegazza, who held the title since 1998.

Gordon, formerly the chief operating officer, has been a Globus & Cosmos employee for 28 years. He will head the North American branch of the Lugano, Switzerland-based international tour operator. There are currently no plans to fill the chief operating officer post, according to company sources.

Funeral services were held in Denver last week for Mantegazza, who took his own life Jan. 29 at age 34.

Scott Nisbet, director of sales and marketing, said the company will not change its direction.

Referring to Mantegazza as a "visionary," Nisbet said, "We will be moving ahead, continuing to implement the vision that Paolo set."

Mantegazza was the grandson of Antonio Mantegazza, who founded Globus Viaggi in 1928. Mantegazza worked for the company in his youth, studied financial engineering in college and worked in risk management in the global capital markets for Bankers Trust in London and in asset management at Credit Suisse in New York. He returned to Globus & Cosmos in 1993.

He is survived by his wife, Staci; son, Sergio; daughter, McLees; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sergio Mantegazza; brother, Fabio, and sister, Dolores.
