The Puerto Rico energy grid is in the midst of an islandwide outage Thursday, and it's expected to last through Thursday afternoon or into Friday.
The island lost power around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, and a full restoration is expected to take anywhere between 24 and 48 hours, destination marketing organization Discover Puerto Rico said in an update Thursday.
The Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan remains fully operational. Discover Puerto Rico said that many hotels, short-term rentals and businesses have generators, although it recommended reaching out to individual properties to find out more.
Most restaurants and attractions in Old San Juan are operating with generators.
Power company LUMA Energy said Thursday that it had activated its emergency operations center. As of 1:25 p.m. Eastern time, about 42% of customers had power.
Ponce, a large city on Puerto Rico's southern coast known for its history and architecture, was mostly without power as of Thursday afternoon. According to LUMA, only 25% of customers had power.
As of 1 p.m. Thursday, 70% of the island's airports had power.
The company said in an update on X that it was investigating the cause of the power outage. LUMA said it hopes to restore power to 90% of customers by Friday afternoon.
The island has had chronic outages since Hurricane Maria slammed into the island in 2017. It took almost a year to restore power to the entire island.
