For the 21st year, Kauai will put on an eco-conscious "Festival of Lights."

The lights will go on Dec. 1 at the Historic County Building in Lihue, which is covered top to bottom in displays made from recycled and reclaimed materials.

The sustainable celebration is open to the public, who can peruse the halls decked in trees, wreaths, ornaments, nativity scenes and other holiday decorations made from items such as water bottles, aluminum cans and plastic containers.

The project is led by Kauai-based artist and designer Elizabeth Freeman, who has had work on display at the Smithsonian and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. The Festival of Lights runs from Dec. 1 through Dec. 30, 6 to 8 p.m. Friday through Sunday, and is also open on Christmas Eve. Admission is free.
