Kauai is offering discounts to visitors at island businesses in exchange for volunteering for an extra layer of Covid-19 safety measures.
Visitors to the Garden Isle who agree to take a coronavirus test three days after their arrival will receive a discount card for use at a range of Kauai businesses.
The Kokua Kauai Card launched on April 5, when Kauai rejoined the Safe Travels program after following a separate set of stricter protocols at the end of 2020 and for the first three months of 2021.
Under Hawaii's Safe Travels
program, travelers must take an approved Covid-19 test within 72 hours
of their departure to be eligible with a negative result to bypass the
state's 10-day quarantine period.
Roughly 60 businesses, hotels and restaurants on the island are participating in the program that provides participants with a card featuring a QR code that links to a site listing the various discounts and incentives.
"We wanted an additional layer of security in addition to what Safe Travels provides," said Mark Perriello, the executive director of the Kauai Chamber of Commerce. "We're getting as many businesses as possible to offer discounts and promotions to people who take the second test to give them more incentive in addition to just doing the right thing."
The program will be conducted by a joint partnership between the Kauai Chamber of Commerce, the Kauai Visitors Bureau and the Kauai chapter of the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association.
