The 20th annual Kauai Festival of Lights kicks off today, adorning the Garden Isle's Historic County Building with displays that, according to organizers, bring together "the value and unique creativity of recycling and Christmas."

The event is the brainchild of Kauai artist Elizabeth Freeman, who creates the majority of the installations: huge wall and floor displays, an electric toy train and trees decorated with ornaments made from recycled cans, plastic water bottles and more.

The free festival operates Fridays through Sundays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. See www.kauaifestivaloflights.com.
