Although visitors traveling from Japan to Hawaii dropped 23.5% year over year in April, statewide occupancy was 68.5%, up 3.2% compared with the same month last year.
Average daily room rates also increased across the islands in April, climbing 8.5%, to $191.26, according to a monthly hotel survey by Hospitality Advisors and Smith Travel Research.
“Given the unfortunate circumstances, the dramatic April loss in the Japanese market was understandably expected,” Joseph Toy, president and CEO of Hospitality Advisors, said in a statement. “However, the U.S. mainland and Canadian markets continue to show pent-up demand that has been fueling Hawaii’s double-digit recovery rate in room revenue through the first four months this year.”
Revenue per available room also rose sharply in Hawaii during April, jumping 13.8% year over year to $131.01 a night.
