The Global Sustainable Tourism Council's accreditation panel recently reviewed and recognized Adventure Green Alaska (AGA), the state's voluntary sustainable tourism certification program.
AGA encourages its members to incorporate best practices into overall management decisions and matters of economic, environmental and social sustainability. More than 60 lodging properties, tour companies and other tourism businesses operating in Alaska have been certified through the program. The Alaska Travel Industry Association manages AGA initiatives.
"Alaska's visitors come to Alaska to see our wild landscapes, mountain scenery, glaciers and wildlife in their natural habitats and experience Alaska's rich native cultures," said ATIA President and CEO Sarah Leonard. "The Global Sustainable Tourism Council recognition is a vote of confidence in the AGA program's efforts to promote sustainable management practices -- environmental, cultural, social and economic choices -- as part of its overall business practice."
