The Strip is full of sweet experiences, from dueling megastores M&Ms World and Hershey's Chocolate World to upscale confection shops such as Jean Philippe at the Bellagio and guilty pleasures such as Momofuku's Milk Bar bakery, arriving at the Cosmopolitan this winter.
But if you're looking for serious chocolate, thoughtfully sourced and made simply without a lot of extra frills and flash, then the place for you is Hexx Chocolate + Confexxions.
The chocolate-and-confection shop at Paris Las Vegas, attached to the full-service restaurant Hexx Kitchen + Bar, calls itself Nevada's only bean-to-bar chocolate maker, and focuses on single-origin bars made with just two ingredients: cacao and organic palm sugar.
Guests at Hexx are encouraged to taste and ask questions about the process of making their chocolates, but until now, the closest customers could come to the actual factory was the other side of a large window looking in on the machines that help take cocoa from pod to plate.
That changed last month when Hexx launched Behind the Bar, a tour and tasting experience that takes guests into the kitchens to learn about how Hexx turns cacao beans from places such as Tanzania, Madagascar and the Dominican Republic into single-origin chocolate bars with real terroir. The tour costs $20 and includes an extensive tasting of the company's signature products as well as Hexx's molten chocolate, hot chocolate and dark chocolate ice cream. Chocoholics, rejoice!
