River cruise options in Europe are seemingly endless, even though there are just a few rivers to choose from. Do clients want to experience the Danube? The Rhine to see the breathtaking gorge and castles? The Douro to sample port in its birthplace?

Itineraries are expansive, with many crafted for special interests and tailored for specific audiences. And that's before I get started on the differences among the cruise brands and their ships.

I surveyed river cruise line executives to uncover their most popular itineraries in Europe for 2026 in hopes this can be a handy starting point for clients who know they want to take a river cruise but don't know where to start.

Here's what they said:

Amadeus River Cruises

Amadeus is observing the highest demand for its Christmas market cruises, as well as tulip-time cruises.

That's no surprise: Christmas market cruises regularly sell out, as they capture a quintessential river cruise experience.

But as far as most passengers booked, Amadeus said its Classical Rhine and Classical Danube itineraries reign supreme.

AmaWaterways

AmaWaterways is observing strong demand for France overall, chief of sales Alex Pinelo said.

Interest is especially strong for the Rhone and Saone. The line's Flavors of Burgundy itinerary has become a top performer less than two years since its debut.

This eight-day sailing goes between Dijon and Lyon and is created for wine lovers. Passengers will visit the region's famous vineyards and have an opportunity to explore Burgundy's winemaking heritage and sample prestigious wines.

"Travelers are really drawn to the opportunity to experience the French art de vivre through food, wine and culture," Pinelo said. "The Seine is also performing very well, as is the south of France across our Provence sailings."

Avalon Waterways

Avalon President Pam Hoffee says the line's most popular river is the Rhine, and its most popular itinerary there is Romantic Rhine

This eight-day cruise travels between Amsterdam and Basel, introducing passengers to some of the most storybook cities in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Switzerland.

"It remains a favorite because it showcases the river's greatest hits, from fairytale villages and medieval castles to classic cities like Amsterdam and Basel," Hoffee said. "It's the quintessential Rhine experience and a perfect introduction to river cruising."

Hoffee also recommended advisors consider pitching clients Avalon's Active & Discovery cruise on the Rhine. She said it's a compelling option for travelers "who want more choice and energy built into their days." Guided hikes, biking and cultural experiences are included in the fare.

Riverside Luxury Cruises

Riverside's most popular itinerary is its Rhone River Roaming. CEO Jennifer Halboth called it "our quintessential route through the South of France."

Demand for the cruise, which has always been popular, has grown steadily stronger every year, with 2026 being its best performing year yet. The itinerary has one of the highest occupancy routes for 2026.

The cruise starts in Lyon and ends in Avignon and takes in Arles, Old Town Lyon and the medieval Tarascon Castle.

"This itinerary has become a guest favorite by effortlessly capturing everything that makes the South of France so special," Halboth said.

(PS: Though I have not sailed this route with Riverside, I have sailed the Rhine and found cuisine along the route to be particularly impressive; the crew sourced local ingredients like cheese and foie gras for us to enjoy.)

Riviera Travel

Riviera's most popular itinerary has remained steadfast: its Blue Danube River Cruise remains its most-sold year after year, said North America president Stuart Milan.

A Danube cruise is a great entry point for those new to river cruising. (I would know; it was my first one!) Though I haven't sailed this one with Riviera, it has some highlights I'm familiar with: Durnstein, Melk and Linz. The itinerary also includes a Hungarian folklore show while in Budapest.

Milan says the Danube allows travelers to experience capital cities, like Budapest, Vienna and Bratislava, but also explore smaller towns along the river.

"This blend of major cities and picturesque towns allows guests to experience multiple countries, cultures and perspectives on one unforgettable journey," he said.

Scenic Group

Scenic Group, which owns Emerald Cruises & Tours and Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, sees its Rhine cruises as its most popular for both brands, said Ken Muskat, who is Scenic's president of U.S. and Latin America.

He pointed to Emerald's Jewels of the Rhine and Scenic's Rhine Highlights; both cruises are eight days long and travel between Amsterdam to Basel.

The Emerald cruise includes a tour of Heidelberg, a hike from Mount Konigstuhl to Heidelberg and a guided bike tour in Breisach.

The Scenic offering includes a private concert at Baroque Palace of Rastatt and a visit to Cochem on the Moselle River; all shore excursions are covered on Scenic cruises, including exclusive experiences, like at the Baroque Palace. Butler service is also offered onboard.

Muskat also suggested that pairing it with a pre- or post-extension in Switzerland, London Amsterdam or Copenhagen would make for a "perfect trip" for first-timers and river regulars alike.

Tauck

The most popular itinerary for Tauck -- companywide, including among its land tour offerings -- is its Blue Danube cruise, river cruising brand manager Beth Westerman said.

This 12-day cruise introduces guests to cities like Prague, Bratislava, Regensburg, Vienna, Budapest and Salzburg. On the cruise, passengers will enjoy exclusive Tauck experiences at a palace in Vienna, a private dinner at Lobkowicz Palace in Prague and a private tour of Strahov Monastery in Prague.

The itinerary has long been Tauck's most popular, Westerman said.

"The Blue Danube resonates so strongly with guests because it brings Tauck's core strengths to life, combining iconic European capitals with all-inclusive value, exclusive access, expert Tauck guides and a more intimate experience with fewer guests, all in one seamless journey that feels both classic and uniquely Tauck," she said.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

Uniworld finds its most popular itinerary to be the Enchanting Danube, which president and CEO Ellen Bettridge says is a guest favorite.

"Guests love the balance it strikes, combining iconic big cities like Vienna, Budapest and Passau with smaller, under-the-radar, storybook towns," she said.

The Generations Collection version of the itinerary, which is designed for families, features experiences like exploring an abandoned underground hospital in Budapest, visiting a gallery of mirrors in Bratislava and an electronica museum in Linz, options that aren't typically found on Danube cruise itineraries with other lines. The standard itinerary includes options like hiking to Bratislava Castle and meeting with a saffron farmer in Durnstein.

Viking

The biggest river cruise line's most popular itineraries are its Rhine Getaway, Romantic Danube and Danube Waltz, said Michele Saegesser, the vice president of sales and national accounts.

Already, many 2026 departure dates have sold out.

"These itineraries are quintessential European river voyages," Saegesser said.

This Insight was updated to clarify some of the offerings in Uniworld Cruises' Enchanting Danube itinerary.
