American Airlines has set a June 28 launch date for daily service between New York JFK and Tokyo Haneda.

The announcement followed the U.S. Department of Transportation's final regulatory approval of the route on Feb. 15. Tickets will go on sale Feb. 26.

With the launch, American will be the only U.S. carrier serving Tokyo from JFK. United flies to Tokyo Haneda and Narita daily from nearby Newark.

American's daily JFK-Haneda flight will augment twice-daily service flown by joint venture partner Japan Airlines (JAL).

The three American/JAL flights will compete with twice-daily service by All Nippon Airways, which is a United joint-venture partner.
