Japan Airlines will provide free insurance that covers costs for travelers who test positive for Covid-19 while traveling, the carrier announced.
The coverage, provided by Allianz Travel, includes up to about US$180,000 in medical costs, including the initial testing fee and subsequent treatment. It also includes coverage for isolation costs and additional travel costs for returning home.
JAL is providing the coverage to all travelers on international flights operated and marketed by the carrier for travel between Dec. 23, 2020, and June 30, 2021. Coverage is valid from 31 days of the first leg of a JAL itinerary. Coverage also expires once a passenger returns to their country of residence.
JAL follows a handful of other global carriers that are providing Covid-19 coverage as part of the ticket price. Emirates, Etihad, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic and WestJet all provide Covid-19 insurance free of charge.
