Dutch carrier KLM has begun flying new business-class seats on its fleet of Boeing 777 aircraft.

Each seat features sliding privacy doors, an upgrade from the carrier's older 777 offering. In addition, the seats will be wider and laid out just four across (compared to the older six-across configuration) with each seat having aisle access.

Other improvements are an adjustable lower-back support and a back-massage feature.

"Thanks to various innovations, the seats and their fittings are 10-15% lighter than other business-class seats in this market segment, thereby contributing to KLM's sustainability objectives," the airline added.

The airline debuted the new seat last month, but not on U.S. routes. This month, KLM is using Boeing 777s daily or almost daily between Amsterdam and New York JFK, Washington Dulles and Atlanta, according to Cirium. KLM declined to say when the seat will first be used for a U.S route.

The carrier has a fleet of 15 Boeing 777-200s and 16 777-300ERs, according to Planespotters.net. KLM will install the new business seats, along with its latest premium economy cabin seats, on each of those planes.

The airline said the revamp will be completed over the coming year.

Correction: KLM already introduced the new Boeing 777 business-class seat on non-U.S. routes.
