AccorHotels has offered to buy Australia-based Mantra Group for about $930 million, according to Mantra.

Mantra oversees more than 80 hotels, resorts and apartments totaling more than 20,000 rooms under the Mantra, Peppers and BreakFree brands.

"Mantra has granted Accor access to due diligence to determine if a transaction can be agreed and recommended unanimously by the Mantra board," Mantra said in a statement on Monday.

AccorHotels hasn't released any information on the bid. An acquisition would enable the global hotel company to gain a greater foothold in Australia and New Zealand.

AccorHotels said last week that it agreed to acquire half of the Orient Express brand from French national rail company SNCF Group, and will operate hotels under the brand.
